Springfield to Boston Overview
- The Alt 7 East/West High-Speed line would start at Springfield Union Station.
- The Pittsfield to Springfield portion could be any of the first six proposed alternatives by the 2019 East-West Rail Study Advisory Committee.
- The first section would run above ground, approximately 13 miles, on existing track, to Palmer where it would enter the portal for the first tunnel (TMT#1).
- At Palmer it would go underground and immediately come to the Palmer station.
- The TMT#1 would continue beneath the Massachusetts Turnpike for approximately 30 miles to a portal in Auburn. This section is where it could reach speeds of 150+ miles per hour.
- A Maintenance/Emergency access facility would be located at Route 84.
- Emerging in Auburn it would proceed above ground on existing track, between 2-5 miles to Worcester Union Station.
- After Union Station it would immediately enter another portal for the second tunnel (TMT#2) and travel beneath existing rail right of way, Shrewsbury Street and Route 9 to the 495 Station, approximately 12 miles.
- From 495 Station it would continue beneath Route 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike to Logan Airport, approximately 28 miles. Again, this is where it could reach speeds of 150+ miles per hour.
- Between the 495 Station and Logan Airport there would be a Maintenance/Emergency access facility at Route 95/128, Stations at West Station (Beacon Yards), Back Bay, South Station and Seaport Station.
- It would connect with the North/South Rail tunnel at Back Bay Station and split off after South Station to a new station at the Seaport and then onto Logan Airport.
- An additional station possible with tunnel extension to Suffolk Downs redevelopment.
